European specialty coffee roasters are increasingly turning to Indian origin coffees — particularly Monsooned Malabar, Coorg Arabica, and Karnataka Robusta — for their unique flavour profiles and competitive pricing compared to Ethiopian or Colombian origins. Germany, Italy, the UK, Belgium, and the Netherlands are the top buyers of Indian green coffee in Europe. This guide helps European roasters and importers understand how to source Indian coffee directly and efficiently.

Why European Roasters Are Choosing Indian Coffee

Monsooned Malabar AA: India's most iconic coffee. Exposure to monsoon winds creates a unique pale golden bean with extremely low acidity, full body, and earthy, spicy, woody notes. No other origin produces this. Perfect for espresso blends seeking body and sweetness. Coorg Arabica: Grown at 1,000-1,600m in the Coorg district of Karnataka. Bright acidity, medium body, floral and citrus notes. Comparable to mid-altitude Colombian Arabica at 30-40% lower price. Karnataka Robusta: Preferred by Italian roasters for traditional espresso blends requiring full body and crema. Consistent quality from established estates. India's coffee is also Rainforest Alliance and UTZ certifiable — important for European retail market requirements.

EU Regulations for Indian Coffee Imports

Indian green coffee exports to EU must comply with: EU Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for pesticides — all Indian coffee for EU must have pesticide residue testing from an accredited lab. Ochratoxin A (OTA) limits: Max 5 ppb for roasted coffee, stricter for green. Moisture: Max 12.5% for EU entry. Coffee Board of India export license — mandatory for all exporters. Phytosanitary certificate. Country of Origin. Cupping score documentation increasingly requested by specialty buyers (SCA cupping protocol).
